It contains three groups of active substances: phytosterols (e.g., beta-sitosterol), pentacyclic triterpenoids (including ursolic and oleanolic acids), and long-chain fatty alcohol ferulic esters (including ferulic acid docosanol and tetracosanol).
The bark oil is rich in active substances, waxes, fatty acids, and other less known components.
The main biological activity of pygeum is attributed to the phytosterol compound known as beta-sitosterol.
