Smelling salts are preparations typically containing ammonium compounds (e.g., ammonium carbonate) which, when released, irritate the nasal lining. Their primary purpose is to rapidly stimulate the nervous system through a brief irritant effect. They are most commonly used in cases of fainting, severe weakness, or temporary loss of consciousness. The scent acts almost instantly, restoring alertness and concentration.

They are popular in sports (especially strength sports and MMA).

However, they should not be used regularly or as a substitute for medical treatment. They are not recommended for individuals with asthma, respiratory diseases, or sensitivity to chemicals.

Smelling salts are safe for occasional use, but excessive use or misuse (e.g., holding them too close to the nose or inhaling for too long) can cause irritation to the mucous membranes, headaches, or in extreme cases, shortness of breath.

To use smelling salts, open the container and hold it near the nose of the person needing stimulation, but not directly into the nostrils. It is advisable to keep the bottle or sachet about 5-10 centimeters away and inhale the scent briefly, for just a second or two.

Smelling salts should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Once opened, their effectiveness typically diminishes within a few weeks (depending on the manufacturer – check the packaging). Unopened containers can be stored for several months, but it is always advisable to check the expiration date. Keep them in their original packaging, tightly sealed, to preserve their efficacy.
